As revolutionary as 3D printing has been for hardware development, there\u2019s still some manual labor that goes into every part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick tutorial that shows how we clean PolyJet parts fresh off the build bed before delivering them to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this tutorial, we\u2019re cleaning a\u00a0<a href=\"\/materials\/3d-printing-vero\">VeroWhite<\/a>\u00a0part, since it\u2019s the most common material used for visual models, which require a more polished look. That said, this process is largely similar for most of\u00a0<a href=\"\/3d-printing-service\">our materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Spatula<\/li><li>Probe Set<\/li><li>Isopropyl Alcohol<\/li><li>Sodium Hydroxide Solution<\/li><li>WaterJet<\/li><li>Compressed Air<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Remove part from build bed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carefully remove the part (covered in support material!) from the build bed using a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cricut-Tools-Craft-Spatula-Scraper\/dp\/B00EZUK7IG\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1444343987&amp;sr=8-5&amp;keywords=spatula+tool\">spatula tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1333\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts6.jpg\" alt=\"cleaning a PolyJet 3D printed part\" class=\"wp-image-2394 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts6.jpg 1999w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts6-1600x1067.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts6-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\" \/><figcaption><em>Cleaning a PolyJet 3D printed part<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll notice a footprint from the part left on the build bed\u2014this is removed using a scraper tool, being especially careful not to damage the metal print bed. Spray the build bed with water and wipe it down with polyester wipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Clean the printer nozzle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clean the nozzle with Isopropyl alcohol to prevent material build-up and to keep the extruder and wipers clean. This process differs depending on the machine, but on the Objet 500, we drop the build bed and use a mirror to ensure the nozzle is clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1333\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts-image02.jpg\" alt=\"polyjet 3d printed part cleaning\" class=\"wp-image-2395 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts-image02.jpg 1999w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts-image02-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts-image02-1600x1067.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/how-to-clean-polyjet-parts-image02-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\" \/><figcaption><em>Clean the nozzle with Isopropyl alcohol<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that it\u2019s important to do Step 1 and Step 2 after&nbsp;<em>every<\/em>&nbsp;print to avoid buildup on the print bed which could damage the nozzle and impact the quality of future prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Hand clean the part<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now focus on the part, which you will see is encased in a wax-like material. If not, it\u2019s time to place the part in a Sodium Hydroxide bath. We used a Stratsys solution here, but there are many different options available that work just as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of the bath is to remove any residue that might be left on the part from the support material.
