Accurate preparation of a 3D model for 3D printing ensures that the final product is dimensionally correct and meets your desired specifications \u2014 the 3D printer will print the model as designed, so any errors will be replicated in the final product. There are many different types of modeling software for designing and exporting 3D print files, and this article covers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhino3d.com\/\">Rhinoceros 3D software<\/a> (aka Rhino) \u2014 Rhino requires some unique considerations when preparing 3D print files.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"313\" height=\"250\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Rhinoceros-3D-Logo.png\" alt=\"Rhinoceros 3D Logo\" class=\"wp-image-11718 lazyload\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Units and Tolerances<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You first need to set correct tolerances before you start modeling by finding the tolerance of the program you are exporting your model to. A good rule of thumb is to set your Rhino tolerance to be 10 times that of the printer tolerance (i.e printer tolerance is 0.1mm, so Rhino tolerance should be set to 0.01mm).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhino file tolerance can be set from the document properties window in the units tab. Bad Objects are those that violate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhino3d.com\/features\/nurbs\/\">NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) rules<\/a> or have structural problems \u2014 they often appear after joining and Boolean operations. Naked Edges are surface edges not connected to other surface edges, which create open meshes that cannot be 3D printed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For successful 3D prints, the 3D model should be watertight, meaning if you dropped the model in a bath, no water would get inside. To achieve a watertight model, you need a closed polysurface. Created surfaces and existing surfaces must be within model tolerance to join correctly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If precision is not important, the JoinEdges command can be used to join surfaces forcibly, however it\u2019s better to recreate the bad surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your NURBS model can be converted to mesh with the Mesh command. SelectShow Edges \u2192 Naked Edges as before. In Rhino 3.0 Service, Release 4.0: Under Bonus Tools you will find \u2018FillHole\u2019 and \u2018FillHoles\u2019 to fix naked edges in the mesh. Make sure to save your NURBS model before this operation as it is difficult or impossible to reverse.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"404\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Fictiv-3D-Printed-Part.jpeg\" alt=\"Fictiv 3D Printed Part\" class=\"wp-image-11720 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To Prevent Bad Edges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the \u2018Checknewobjects\u2019 command to verify objects as they are created. This runs in the background and instantly detects bad objects and corrects objects instantly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many bad surfaces can be fixed by exploding and rejoining the model. If this doesn\u2019t work, that means there are NURBS structural problems in the model.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explode detected bad objects and use the Selbad or Extract Bad Surfaces commands to delete specific bad surfaces. Use the Rebuildedges command to recreate the deleted surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using Osnap helps to prevent open curves, a common source of bad objects.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Pro-Tip: If you want to see what others are making using Rhino 3D, <a href=\"https:\/\/discourse.mcneel.com\/c\/gallery\/46\/l\/top\">check out the gallery<\/a> on the Rhinoceros website \u2014 there are some pretty cool designs in there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating and Exporting a Mesh<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhino software creates a NURBS solid model. However for 3D printing, the model must be exported as a mesh model. To perform Rhino to STL export, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>File \u2192 Save As \u2192 .STL and select a name for your STL file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are simple controls and detailed controls \u2013 always select detailed controls.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the specific settings recommended for 3D printing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>Density: 0.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum Angle: 0.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum Aspect Ratio: 0.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum Edge Length: 0.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum Edge Length: 0.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum Edge to Surface: 0.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum Initial Grid Quads: 16<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refine Mesh: yes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jagged Seams: no<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simple Planes: yes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum Distance edge to Surface: Less than half of the printer\u2019s resolution. For millimeter unit models try 0.1 to 0.01.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the STL Export Options dialog box, set the file type as Binary and click OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check Your Mesh Model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with the recommended settings, your STL mesh may have errors that make it unsuitable for 3D printing. Here are the most common problems and solutions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Too Many Polygons<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your mesh polygon number is higher than 1,000,000, the file will be unwieldy and difficult to print. Small items, like jewelry, should have around 150,000 polygons, while a 30 x 30 x 70mm object will have around 600,000 \u2014 so use the Reduce Mesh command to make your file more manageable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Incoherent Mesh Normals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018positive\u2019 direction of your mesh faces may not be coherent throughout the model, so use the \u2018Unify Mesh Normals\u2019 tool to fix the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Holes in the Mesh<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Selecting open meshes and performing a naked edge analysis as described above will identify any holes in your mesh. This is easy to fix using the \u2018FillHole\u2019 command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Non-Manifold Errors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Errors can occur when multiple mesh surfaces share a vertex or edge, so use the ShowEdgestool to find these errors.
