Now it\u2019s time to <a href=\"https:\/\/app.fictiv.com\/\">get it quoted for manufacturing<\/a>.<br><br>In my experience, it can be helpful to get quotes earlier in a project to provide an initial sense of cost, lead time, and manufacturability. However, the further along your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/product-development-planning-from-product-idea-to-manufacture\">product development<\/a> is, the more accurate those quotes will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-starting-a-quote-for-my-phone-stand-multi-tool\">Starting a Quote for my Phone Stand\/Multi-Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"154\" height=\"51\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-cta.png\" alt=\"Alt text: Start a new manufacturing quote on the Fictiv platform.\" class=\"wp-image-19812 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LEvTbd4u-OY\">start a new quote<\/a>, I selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/injection-molding-service\">injection molding<\/a> for the manufacturing process and uploaded my CAD files. I had to specify that the metal insert would be CNC machined, although it could be die-cast later at higher volumes. For the overmold grip, I chose a 70A shore TPU for a good mix of rigidity and compression with lower risk of delamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I requested a light matte texture (MT11000) with a high-polish finish for the recessed Fictiv logo. I also selected specific Pantone colors\u2014Fictiv Green and Carbon\u2014for the respective parts to ensure accurate color matching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"378\" height=\"706\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-details.png\" alt=\"Configuration details on the Fictiv platform.\" class=\"wp-image-19809 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a save and close, I clicked \u201cView Feedback\u201d to see the automated DFM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fictiv-s-automated-design-for-manufacturing-dfm-feedback\">Fictiv\u2019s Automated Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Feedback<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thickness-analysis\">Thickness Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I realized there were some thick and thin areas on the part, but decided to move forward with the slight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/troubleshooting-injection-molding-sink-marks\">risk of sink<\/a> in the thicker area by the hinge, which could likely be processed out by adjusting molding parameters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deciding whether or not to core this area out comes with experience and understanding your supplier&#8217;s capabilities. If the area is red on the DFM, or you have any doubts, it\u2019s always safer to core out (remove plastic) in thick material sections if allowable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the thin areas, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/fictiv-made-part-2-design-for-injection-molding\">ribs for the overmold<\/a> shown in light blue, I have a steel-safe option to thicken it later, which reduces risk. The coloring allows you to clearly see the parting lines and any sections that may not have enough draft. It clearly shows that I need slides for the hinge area as expected. I added one degree of draft to these surfaces, although sometimes you can get away with zero draft and a polished surface if necessary for the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dfm-slide-annotation-nbsp\">DFM Slide Annotation&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"536\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-annotation.png\" alt=\"Slide annotation for DFM on the Fictiv digital manufacturing platform.\" class=\"wp-image-19802 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great feature of the Fictiv platform is the ability to annotate slides to communicate your intentions on the DFM, as shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1277\" height=\"786\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-slide.png\" alt=\"Annotated slide of the Fictiv platform for DFM.\" class=\"wp-image-19813 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-slide.png 1277w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-slide-768x473.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1277px) 100vw, 1277px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, I just needed to make a few more necessary design changes and then upload part revisions in the same quote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-injection-molding-dfm-features-on-the-fictiv-platform\">New Injection Molding DFM Features on the Fictiv Platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fictiv platform now features additional DFM capabilities, providing you with even more insight into the tooling design and its impact on the final product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ejector-pins\">Ejector Pins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ejector (EJ) pins are a necessity in most injection molding scenarios in order to push the part out of the cavity of the tool. I was able to clearly see the pin locations necessary for ejection and understand that there will be a slight aesthetic mark in those areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number and size of the pins can potentially be reduced and compensated for with additional draft on the overall part. I considered pushing for fewer pins to improve aesthetics, especially in the overmolding rib section, but I accepted it because the interior surface is less cosmetic (Class B) surface that would be mostly hidden.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1865\" height=\"1033\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-ejector.png\" alt=\"Ejector pin location visualization on the Fictiv digital manufacturing platform.\" class=\"wp-image-19807 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-ejector.png 1865w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-ejector-768x425.png 768w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-ejector-1536x851.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1865px) 100vw, 1865px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gating\">Gating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The gate is the injection point where molten plastic flows into the mold to create the part. Most gates typically leave a visible vestige that can be trimmed off as flush as possible after molding. The gate type and location are critical factors to consider when it comes to the part design, material, and finished quality \u2014 both aesthetically and functionally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DFM shows the gate and allows you to provide feedback on whether the location is acceptable. This is important to predict knit lines where the flowing material meets, typically on the opposite side of the gate. It will also raise any concerns about mold fill to prevent short shots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also request a more detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/moldflow-analysis-in-injection-molding\">mold flow analysis<\/a> (at an additional cost) when filling out your project requirements. I had no problem with my mold flow as it was pretty straightforward, but it can be critical with more complex designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1906\" height=\"1093\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-mold.png\" alt=\"Mold flow visualization on the Fictiv digital manufacturing platform.\" class=\"wp-image-19806 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-mold.png 1906w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-mold-768x440.png 768w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-mold-1536x881.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1906px) 100vw, 1906px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thin-mold-steel-nbsp\">Thin Mold Steel&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thin steel is important to look out for because long, narrow, or sharp sections of the tool are prone to damage or breaking. This can affect part quality and leave plastic material wherever the steel comes off. Replacing the missing tool steel is a more complicated and expensive fix that requires welding, so make sure to meet the minimum thickness and size requirements for your design features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I resolved a couple of sharp areas in my design. Most notably, the thin markings for millimeter measurements had to be spaced out and changed to centimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mold-library\">Mold Library<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"242\" height=\"349\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fictivmade-library.png\" alt=\"Mold library location on the Fictiv platform.\" class=\"wp-image-19805 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fictiv\u2019s Mold Library is a great resource that provides full transparency into the molds that you have developed and own.
