Here\u2019s a quick resource to help you learn the most common terms for describing physical parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fundamental-dfm-terms-across-processes\"><strong>Fundamental DFM Terms Across Processes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-undercut\"><strong>Undercut<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In manufacturing, an undercut is a recessed or overhanging feature that obstructs direct tooling access.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/cnc-machining-service\">CNC machining<\/a>, it refers to a recess, groove, or overhang that cannot be reached with a standard end mill in a single toolpath or setup because it\u2019s located beneath or behind another surface.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/injection-molding-service\">injection molding<\/a> and casting, undercuts are features of a part that prevent it from being ejected directly from the mold or die in the open-shut direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are various solutions to undercuts, although they may increase manufacturing cost and complexity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multi-axis machining, or specialized cutters, such as T-slot, dovetail, or lollipop tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Injection molding tools can include slides, lifters, collapsible cores, or split molds.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"774\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-undercut.jpg\" alt=\"Undercut example\" class=\"wp-image-21661 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-undercut.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-undercut-768x330.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-undercut-1536x660.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-undercut-515x221.jpg 515w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-undercut-1500x645.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-through-hole-blind-hole\"><strong>Through Hole \/ Blind Hole<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Through holes refer to holes that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/drilling-boring-reaming-precision-holes\">drilled, reamed, milled<\/a>, or otherwise created that go completely through a substrate. Essentially, a through-hole is a hole that goes all the way through a material.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For comparison, a blind hole does not go all the way through a substrate and leaves a recessed surface. A boss often has a hole in the center, serving as a receptacle for fasteners to facilitate assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ribs\"><strong>Ribs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ribs are protrusions like bosses, but thinner and longer. They are typically used more in additive processes to increase strength with minimal material thickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-core-out\"><strong>Core-Out<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coring out a part means shelling or removing internal material. For additive and molding processes, this reduces material and cost. With molding and casting, fillets and rounds that are not on the parting line typically improve moldability, but must be added carefully to maintain consistent wall thickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-threads\"><strong>Threads<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Threading is the process of creating a screw thread. More screw threads are produced each year than any other machine element in the world. There are many methods of generating threads, including subtractive methods (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/methods-for-manufacturing-and-calling-out-threaded-holes\">various thread-cutting<\/a> and grinding techniques), formative methods (such as rolling and forming), molding and casting, additive methods (such as 3D printing), or combinations thereof.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"996\" height=\"312\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-thread.png\" alt=\"Thread Terminology\" class=\"wp-image-21660 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-thread.png 996w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-thread-768x241.png 768w, https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFM-thread-515x161.png 515w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Thread Terminology<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tolerance\"><strong>Tolerance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering tolerance is the permissible limit or limits of variation in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A physical dimension of features within a part or assembly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A measured value or physical property of a material, manufactured object, system, or service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other measured values (such as temperature, humidity, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In engineering and safety, a physical distance or space<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>Tolerance stack-up<\/strong> is cumulative variance across multiple dimensions or components. This can be controlled in the design with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fictiv.com\/articles\/gdt-101-an-introduction-to-geometric-dimensioning-and-tolerancing\">GD&amp;T (Geometric Dimensioning &amp; Tolerancing)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-surface-finish\"><strong>Surface Finish<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finish typically considers the texture, or roughness, of a part\u2019s surface. This can be specified and added to an injection molding tool.
